about the project

The National Arts Festival (NAF) was awarded funds as part of the Presidential Economic Stimulus Package (PESP), the PESP is being administered by the National Arts Council (NAC). The NAF signed and returned its contract with the NAC for awarded PESP funds in January 2021. Embracing the exceedingly tight deadlines imposed by NAC, the NAF initiated implementation of projects with curators, artists, technicians and venue staff, across all nine provinces of South Africa, during the course of February, while also following up with the NAC to make our first tranche payment.

The NAF to date, have not received any of its contracted funds. Curators and artists are at various stages of implementation of their projects, many have completed. People have extended their company funds, their personal funds, their time, their word, people have worked and implemented in good faith. The NAF, unable to float the full awarded and contracted amount, have had to pause projects. For a sector which has been without work for over a year, there seems to be a profound lack of understanding of the devastation further beset on an already devastated sector, by a presidential programme which was intended to inject relief and income.

The NAF has chosen to continue to present these unborn projects, the love and care of artists for their work, their community and their country, the impact on lives which was meant to be. Here, My Dear.
