The project is led by a professional film maker/director of uMabonakude films Thulani Soqaga born in Port Elizabeth. Back in 2007 while he was still a high school learner he got an opportunity to write and direct a short film called ”My Guilty Conscience ruled my life” in a competition called Nab’Bomi film competition and this was just a start and a dream that one day he will do the same to the learners in his community (Motherwell) and that dream has just started to come to life. This project looks to develop South African Youth through active engagement with the entire film process or “Film Value Chain”. From storytelling basics through to digital media and film production to critical assessment of content, UMABONAKUDE FILMS develops the skills and understanding essential to life in our digitally connected world. We are no longer just consumers of media, we are active audiences, engaged, responsive and creative, and have become media producers. The average person is now a consumer-producer of media whether they consider themselves to be part of the industry or not. With such power for influence literally in the palms of our hands, there is a dire need for skills.
