Between the Pillar and the Post | A Conversation

As part of the “Between the Pillar and the Post | In Audio” exhibition at National Arts Festival 2021, we invite you to join us online for a conversation with some of the makers involved with the publication and audio exploration.

On Thursday 22 July at 5pm, the festival hosted a discussion about language, performing arts and education; specifically, the way that the pieces featured in the exhibition use language, and the way language reflects so much about place, history, movement, people – which speaks to the intentions in publishing the book and the audio project.

Standard Bank Young Artist for Theatre (2017) and co-publisher of “Between the Pillar and the Post”, Monageng ‘Vice’ Motshabi will host the conversation with writer Vuyisile Mshudulu and performer Foxy Riet (both of whom where part of the project with the piece, K’ster Conversations – Boy and Girl) to address issues around language in writing and performance.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Between the Pillar and the Post began in 2019 as a multi-lingual anthology of contemporary South African monologues and scenes published by the Market Theatre Laboratory, in partnership with Diartskonageng. The intention of this compilation was to reflect the diversity of South African people in the characters and conversations on the page, ensuring that every actor, especially those in student and audition contexts, has the opportunity to perform in their mother tongue, and to work with writing they connect to; that feels current, relatable, and accessible.
