Eastern Cape Ensemble

Dance  /  Music / Great Hall

The Eastern Cape Indigenous Music and Dances Ensemble 2023 production will be a tribute to Latozi “Madosini” Mpahleni. She performed under the name Madosini, regarded as a national treasure as she played indigenous instruments such as the uhadi and mhrubhe musical bows, and the isitolotolo. She popularised these instruments around the world.
Over the years, she had collaborated and written songs with British rock singer Patrick Duff, and in 2003 they went on to perform a number of successful concerts together around the world. She had collaborated with South African musicians Thandiswa Mazwai, Ringo, Derek Gripper and Gilberto Gil the famous Brazilian musician. Her latest collaboration with musicians Hilton Schilder, Jonny Blundell, Lulu Plaitjies and Pedro Espi-Sanchis has resulted in the recording of an African/Jazz fusion CD under the name of AmaThongo and various concerts around Africa.
The Eastern Cape Ensemble will be fusing indigenous dances that are solely from this province, indigenous music and
instruments that have been popularised by Madosini around the world. Our production is composed mainly of elderly men and women from the province, with a few up-and-coming artists who have made a name for themselves as musicians and dancers in the country.
This a production not to be missed by anyone in the festival.
