Eastern Cape Ensemble

Music / Great Hall

This year’s production is dedicated to the life and legacy of Reverend John Knox Bokwe, an early modern African intellectual who was a South African journalist, Presbyterian minister and one of the most celebrated isiXhosa hymn writers and musicians. He is best known for his compositions Vuka Deborah, Plea for Africa, and Marriage Song.

Choreographed by Mandilakhe Gwashu, this is a combination of isginci, uhadi, makweyana and other traditional instruments, make this production distinctly Eastern Cape in flavour.

Come and witness the Eastern Cape genes of the Khoi, AbaThembu, AmaBhaca, AbeSuthu, AmaHlubi, AmaXhosa, AmaMpondo in celebration.

Please note that this show is in a Rhodes University venue and as such you will be required to show your vaccine certificate or a negative test no older than 72 hours or proof of Covid positive status within the last three months.
