Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese art form that has become known around the world in the modern form of marbling. Larissa and Stella Don, South African suminagashi artists extraordinaire, showcase their skills accompanied by dance and music in a live performance from their mountain home outside Clarens.

If you haven’t yet, also watch the tutorial video, ‘Suminagashi @ home with Kitty Kat and Cup Cake’ which shows how to create suminagashi at home using simple materials.

Larissa and Stella will begin with a 30 minute workshop taking the tutorial video a step further, sharing additional helpful tips for creating suminagashi and marbling. This allows for audience participation in the live suminagashi and marbling session that follows, accompanied by live music directed by Daniel Hutchinson.

Larissa Don, master marbler and owner of The SA Marbling Company, has been practicing the art of marbling for twenty years and sees herself as a new generation water and eco surface and textile designer. She is renowned within the industry as a marbler that pushes the boundaries of the craft and is considered a master not just in marbling but also in the oldest form of water arts, Japanese suminagashi. Larissa has been referred to as the “premier fabric marbler of the world”. She is passionate about sharing the art of marbling and suminagashi with young people in particular, and has teamed up with composer and music teacher Daniel Hutchinson’s Girl with the Magic Paintbrush project, to bring suminagashi into children’s theatre as a key aesthetic and participation element within the presentation of the musical dance showpiece.
