Going to Fetch Kathy

Theatre / St Andrew's Hall

The story explores the legacies of colonialism and Apartheid in public spaces, and how these legacies are transmitted into knowledge in post-democratic South Africa.

Travelling between the past and future, the production highlights the journey of a shoe-maker who witnesses racist behaviour by a Grade R educator. Set in Schweizer-reneke, the film includes a visit from a long-dead Nelson Mandela, as well as colonists Captain Schweizer and Field-Cornet Reneke. In the end, the shoe-maker is left with little choice but to go and fetch Kathy (Ahmed Kathrada, who was born in Schweizer-reneke).
