A concert staged from a female empowerment musicological stance, opera-trained singer Emma Farquharson (The Forest Weaver) collaboratively showcases the work of select female Western Art Music composers in an attempt to generate conversation around the underperformed of music history.
Cellist Caleb Vaughn-Jones and Emma once again share excerpts of footage from their Grahamstown National Arts Arena Festival sold-out show “A Feather on the Breath of God”, whilst Emma and Lara illustrate their own recent Scottish folk song ventures, all in order to Hear Her Now.
The project features a new voice over recording of “uit die resonante holtes”, an Afrikaans poem penned by Lara for Emma, about the power of her female singing voice, which they believe holds true also as an acknowledgement and celebration of the creative expression of Women In Music.
The cherry on the top is Emma and Ilse’s debut performance of Prof. Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph’s Art Song, “Boy On A swing” (2018), set to the poetry of Oswald Mbuyiseli Mtshali. She will be accompanied by pianist Ilse Myburgh, with performance art featuring Maria Thabethe and Mduduzi Ngcobo.
