Marcus Wyatt & Romy Brauteseth – OUTOFTHELOOP

Marcus & Romy first recorded the duo during the first global lockdown in March 2020 – this first recording was in acoustic format, just bass and trumpet/flugel and featured five of Wyatt’s older and new compositions. In April 2020, the pair then decided to record another 5 compositions, but with a very different approach – this time the aim was to create a fuller, more groove oriented ensemble sound. Without being able to call upon any of their colleagues or peers, the 2 musicians set about creating and recording a series of loops and grooves, using only organic, non-digital instruments, implements and common household utensils – lockdown was in full effect, and self sufficiency was the medium imposed upon this project. Wyatt & Brauteseth first recorded the songs in stripped down duo format, and then slowly added layer upon layer, extra horns and upright bass (both utilising efx pedals), voices, electric bass and a ton of percussion/drum loops.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Marcus Wyatt and Romy Brauteseth have been playing together in various projects for almost a decade. Both masters on their respective instruments – and, co-incidentally, both originally from Gqeberha – they join together to present a unique and enjoyable duo ensemble, overdubbed and multi-tracked in unusual ways, that is full of creativity and originality. Wyatt has featured on over 40 albums as well as recording six albums under his own name and is one of South Africa’s leading trumpeters and bandleaders. Brauteseth is one of South Africa’s most in-demand bass players both nationally and internationally, performing with a variety of different groups, including Bombshelter Beast and the Bokani Dyer Trio.
