Nathi Bantu, formerly known as reggae star Nathi B, has a unique sonic texture and intonation which brims with sincerity. Born in the late 1970’s and hailing from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cap, he grew up to become a professional boxer in the late 1990s. The call of music however was too strong and he soon handed over his gloves in pursuit of music. His album Ilanga (2009) evokes memories of early Bob Marley & the Wailers and Dennis Brown on his debut album. Ilanga garnered him the title of YFM’s Best Local Radio Artist in 2010. In 2005 he started writing songs in his mother tongue, isiXhosa and found his musical voice for his career moving forward. And in 2012, he received a South African Traditional Music Award (SATMA) in the Best Reggae Album category.
