Megan-Geoffrey Prins (Standard Bank Young Artist for Music, 2019) presents a solo piano recital that subverts art music hierarchies that place history above contemporary, global above local. While this program reflects on the canons of the past through the work of Ravel, it places equal value on the rebirth of art music through the works of international contemporary and local young composers. By performing contemporary and local works alongside well-known Western Art Music repertoire, Prins hopes to reinvigorate the classical piano recital.
The program includes the following works: Solitude by Nahre Sol; Gaspard de La Nuit by Maurice Ravel; Ndahamba Ndabuya by Karl Lobi; Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues by Frederic Rzewski; and Concert Paraphrase on Mendelssohn’s ‘Sommernachtstraum’ by Arcadi Volodos.
This production will run for 60 minutes with no interval.
