Phumelele (Pura) Lavisa

Spoken word artist, writer and multimedia scholar from eGcuwa, EC. His performance career began when he completed a NDip in Audio Engineering at Cape Audio College [CT]. After obtaining a BA from UFH majoring in Languages, he pursued honours in Anthropology at RU, with focus on Decoloniality and Indigenous Knowledge Systems, after-which he completed an MA in Creative Writing at RU. Currently he reads for a PhD in Journalism and Media Studies at RU, with focus on radio and digital broadcast.

Having co-established Imonti FM [EL], been a Creative Director at Emthonjeni Arts Residency [Peddie], content producer at Chimurenga [PASS], he then got employed as researcher for a Robben Island Memories documentary series project [CHDM] where he interviewed about 100 Robben Island ex-political prisoners and their families, mostly PAC and APLA Veterans.

Since the beginning of 2021 Lavisa has been commissioned by Honorable Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima, as an author of this iconic leader’s memoirs/biography still in production process.
Together with a colleague, he is now a Co-Founder and Executive Director of ABAPHANSi [ink] Foundation, an EC based research and multimedia institute that aims to produce local content for a global market.
