The Tower & The Tree – a Standard Bank Ovation award-winning bedtime podcast starring festival favourites, Aaron and Lisa McIlroy and their kids. The rude bell tower, played by Aaron, drives all the townspeople crazy with his loud and selfish bell-ringing. Alone and miserable, Tower wants to change but doesn’t know how. Suddenly a mysterious and kindly Tree, played by Fiona McIlroy, appears and befriends him. Tree gives Tower the courage to change and shows him the power of love in this wonderfully funny and thoroughly delightful modern fairy tale. Written and directed by Patrick Kenny, this bedtime podcast is suitable for the whole family.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Patrick Kenny, creator and producer of The Tower & The Tree, is a writer, director and actor whose canny sense for comedy has won over festival audiences since his student days and in his former incarnation as a stand-up comedian in The Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow, Comedy Games, Pat Ponders on East Coast Radio, SAFM’s Friday Laugh In and The Cunning Linguist. His collaborations – as director and co-writer – with comedian Aaron McIlroy, have produced a series of award-winning, best-selling one-man shows: ADHD and other Gifts (2018-2019); Comedy Masterclass (2016-2017) and soon to feature at the virtual National Arts Festival, The Happy Clapper.
Together with his wife, actress, singer and the play’s narrator Shannon, Patrick has consulted to public and private sector agencies, created short films, live theatre and used improvisation in behavioural change programmes, addressing social diversity and using humour to overcome barriers to communication. He is currently working on “Dudu and Buffalo” – a children’s story book and animation series about a little girl and her pet African buffalo. He is also working on a collection of short stories based on his life as a conscript in the SADF.
Aaron McIlroy is one of South Africa’s most popular entertainers, both on stage and screen. Appearing with John Cleese in the Spud movies and Desmond Dube on TV, Aaron also has a string of stage blockbusters under his belt. These include, among other hits, his popular satires, ADHD, Family Therapy, Comedy Master Class, The Loser, Mr Personality, My Cousin Brother, The Stand-Up, DOF and The Golfer.
Lisa Bobbert is the multi award winning actress from the stage hit Shirley Valentin. She has also performed with husband Aaron in their award-winning two-hander, Defending the Planet, as well as appearing in a succession of other hit shows including The Revenge of the Pink Panties, Sex Bugs And Rock ‘n Roll, Belly Laughs, and Abbamaniacs, their hugely popular tribute to the Swedish super group, Abba.
