ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Neil Gonsalves is a composer, pianist, bandleader and music educator. His formed a trio with Mozambican bassist Ildo Nandja, and young Durban- born drum virtuoso, Riley Giandhari in 2016. The trio released their debut recording, Blessings and Blues in April, 2021. Given that Ildo is currently based in the Netherlands, the current trio employs Talent Mzukulu Mbatha on bass, who was also the recording engineer on the Blessings and Blues album.

Neil employs a trio+ concept, bringing in additional musicians to the ensemble as and when the budget allows, and the music requires. The two most regular associates of the trio are Swazi- born vocal powerhouse, Zoe ‘The Seed’ Masuku and Siyakhula Academy and Durban Music School alumnus, trumpeter Thabo Sikhakane. The concerts preceding the Blessings and Blues album in 2019 featured this formation.

It is Neil’s vision to record an album with this group, to feature their amazing ensemble chemistry, individual music prowess, and his penchant for writing witty and irreverent lyrics to some of his latest tunes. The concert program will feature selections from the Blessings and Blues album, as well as new material that will feature in Neil’s next album release.
