24 June to 28 June 2020

The 2020 National Schools’ Festival for Grade 12s begins just before the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), overlapping with the first weekend, which means there will be host of fantastic theatre productions, visual art exhibitions, street theatre performances, craft markets and music concerts on offer to our participants. Plus, we’ll tap into the wealth of creative arts specialists who’ll be in town to facilitate workshops and present talks.

We’re planning on offering a programme that will appeal to first- and second-language English students, as well as music, art, design, drama, and technology students with a range of options for workshops and performances. Learners will be able to select a programme of activities to suit their interests while still being part of a big group experience.

Schools’ Fest On the Road

Schools Fest On the Road

The Schools’ Fest On the Road is a programme of regional festivals that offer Grade 11 learners a two-day engagement in the arts that includes a talk by a key note speaker, a selection of workshops, and four to five performances. The core aims of the programme are to engage in audience development, supplement the often under-resources arts and culture components of school curricula, and expose participants to a range of genre, arts opportunities and career options.

We hope to inspire creativity and instil in South Africa’s youth a sense of pride in their artistic and cultural heritage. We anticipate that delegates will open their minds to new avenues of expression and we challenge them to engage in topical or personal issues using the arts.

The provisional dates for the 2019 Schools’ Fest on the Road programmes are:

  • Western Cape (Cape Town) 6 – 7 March
  • KwaZulu Natal (Durban)     16 – 17 April
  • Eastern Cape (Makhanda) 8 – 9 May
  • Free State (Bloemfontein) 12 – 13 August
  • Northern Cape (Kimberly)   15 – 16 August
  • North West (Mahikeng)      19 – 20 August
  • Gauteng (Johannesburg)    5 – 8 September

If you are interested in receiving more information on the festivals in your area or in the National Schools’ Festival for Grade 12s, please let us know emailing artseducation@foundation.org.za or completing the online form. As soon as registration opens, we will send you the necessary documentation.

Please note that, until we have guaranteed funding, the above dates for the Schools’ Fest on the Road programme are provisional. We are, however, optimistic that our funding applications will be favourable and encourage all schools to start fundraising in order be able to provide their learners with this fantastic opportunity. We have kept the cost per participant as low as possible: R400 for the two-day Schools’ Fest On the Road programmes and R820 per participant for the National Schools’ Festival in Makhanda.
