In 2022, award winning artist, Nyaniso Lindi opened his Backshack Studio in his home in Joza. Made possible by the National Arts Festival Makhanda, the studio is a space opened up to the youth of Joza working with found items from the dumping sites of Joza township in Makhanda. In the past few months, the studio also became a tiny backshack art library & chess club.

Backshack Studio is also where the artist is working on his new work, Battered & Broozed! A work that is surreal interplay between object and the human body to create these mutant like figures, this unity between these two creating a visual text that takes you through different political, social, economical and cultural episodes. The mutability of the representation is the understanding that signs are unstable depending on the context. Basically it is the ambiguity between linguistic description and visual representation.

The scheduled 1 hour studio visit includes a homely Makhanda welcome with light refreshments, time in the studio with the artist & possibly a game of chess.
