In Curls and Thrills, Sukeina Issufo shares the chronicles of a curly-headed coloured girl with the audience. It is at once a love letter to her younger self and the woman she is yet to blossom into. This poetic journey of transformation explores love, heartbreak, loss, identity and generational trauma.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Sukeina Issufo is a dynamic and creative performer and director who recently graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with an Honours degree in Theatre and Performance (2022). Majoring in performance studies and directing, Ms.Issufo has a broad skillset which makes her a versatile asset. Demonstrating her versatility and skill- she wrote, directed, performed and designed the set of her one act play entitled The Postlude. The play was met with awe of the performance, aesthetics and narrative. The thespian also has experience in screen acting where she performed as the lead of the short films- Waiting for Death in an Apartment and Something’s in My Loft (2022). These roles saw her experimenting with different genres, namely horror and drama. Tracing her career back to previous years, in 2019 she held her own in a supporting role in the play entitled Nuclear. She played the role of Tessa exceptionally well and maintained her presence even when she had no dialogue. In addition, Sukeina has basic training in puppetry- making her apt to breathe life into her work. Ms.Issufo’s strong will and determination make her a valuable asset to any organisation. The artist is currently writing plays and completing her poetry anthology.

Antonio Van Lendt is a young, vibrant and powerful performer. His experience in the performing arts was nurtured during his career in the National School of the Arts (NSA). Here, he received training in a wide spectrum of theatrical styles, both practically and theoretically, moulding a key mind, eye and body for the arts that make him proactive, flexible and diligent. He is currently completing an honours degree at The University of the Witwatersrand, sharpening these very skills and attributes. Notably he has also
completed the three-week option of the South African Lessac Kinesensics January 2023 Intensive Workshop hosted by the School of the Arts: Drama at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Antonio is a highly proficient practitioner and a competent facilitator and teacher. In his career he has headed several productions and facilitated classes and workshops in many styles and genre within theatre.
