The Native and the Umbilical Archive

Art Talk / The Black Power Station

In this workshop we explore some of the precolonial stories that were preserved in writing by the first Xhosa converts. The workshop explores this history from the concept of the umbilical cord – inkaba – as a concept by which African languages explore questions of origins, historical memory and the yearning to connect with the past and with the present community.

Presented by Nomalanga Mkhize (Nelson Mandela University) with illustrations by Mfundo Ndlevu.
