New in 2018: learn new skills in our art workshops

Published on 8 June 2018

Visitors to the National Arts Festival this year are being given the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get creative with a new series of art classes that form part of the Visual Art programme for the first time this year.

Curated by Carmen Ford and the National Arts Festival, the series of classes are taught by artists who are masters of their craft and include Afro-Futurist collage making with Graeme Germond, soapstone carving with Beloved Makina and Elisha Rangwari, and learning woodcut carving and printmaking techniques with Ian Tainton.

“The workshops were introduced as a way of giving our Fringe visual artists another platform to share their skills and earn a little extra while at Festival,” says Ford. “It will also be a way for artists to network and engage with the public outside of their exhibitions. Doing one of the workshops will give people, of all ages, a wonderful creative outlet, taking them beyond being a spectator and they will create a special treasure to take home too.”

The workshops as well as the Curated Spaces exhibition at the Monument are both in response to feedback received from artists who participate in Fringe exhibitions. “We’ve realised that the Fringe visual art programme needed a few changes and the art workshops and a curated exhibition were top of the list of achievable short-term goals for this year.”

  • NOTE: All art workshops take place in the Carinus Annex studio rooms in Donkin Street. Prices are per person – concessions are available for learners and students. All materials are provided. Unless stated otherwise, workshops are 2.5 hours.
