COVID – 19 Pandemic
Published on 12 April 2026
COVID-19 is declared a global pandemic, triggering unprecedented public health measures and widespread economic disruption. South Africa implements strict lockdowns, profoundly affecting businesses, cultural institutions, and daily life. In response, the National Arts Festival adapts by presenting its programme in a fully digital format for the first time over the following two years, ensuring continuity while reaching new and geographically dispersed audiences. As conditions evolve, the Festival continues to adapt to a changing cultural landscape, reshaping itself to expand access and support greater equality of representation. This moment marks not an endpoint, but an ongoing transition, as the Festival’s story continues to unfold within an increasingly digital age.
