Those who attended Mandla Mbotwe’s Sabamnye noMendi were left in no doubt that they’d seen something extraordinary. In songs, dance, pictures, film and multimedia the audience who had gathered at night at Grahamstown’s Botanical Gardens were taken on a journey through time, spaces and recaptured memories to repossess the timeless, undefined period of the story of the sinking of the SS Mendi in 1817.
