Eva’s Apple

Theatre / Gymnasium

Eva’s Apple is both an historical and current note on how colonisation and the recent global market economy have compromised and distorted access to and the consumption of food. The performance connects today’s dehumanisation, disembodiment, violence against and sex trafficking of women with the oppressive past. Eva’s Apple is the portrayal and reminder of how women’s bodies and food became commodities for survival.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Edu-Drama is a programme under the Gender Equity Unit, that utilised educational theatre to address and raise awareness of the realities of black women within today’s society, providing a healing space, promoting sisterhood, and unpacking Black Radical/Radical Black Feminism. The programme was initiated in 2005, when students and staff of the University of the Western Cape came together with women from the community and workshopped their first production, Reclaiming the P… Word. This production was used to protest against the endemic of violence against women in the country. Eva’s Apple is the 10th production under the Edu-Drama programme.
