Jazz Umcimbi

Music / The Black Power Station

Umcimbi is a Xhosa word that describes a traditional ceremony, specifically here for Xhosa people. Jazz Umcimbi (herein referred as JUE) seeks to reimagine folk music (umombelo, amagwijo, and amahubo) through the lens of South African Jazz. In this case, South African jazz functions as a solemn space in which cultural sensibilities dialogue. This work unfolds as an invention that engages music as a point of reference for locating histories and identities of the Nguni people. The band stand serves as an ethnographic and technological platform. Essentially, the entirety of the practice is experimental and facilitates the performance and new meanings and interpretations thereof. Presenting this work it is imperative to highlight that communality and inclusivity are central to the totality of the practice.

This work, here prepared for the Black Power Station, will be presented by the Jazz Umcimbi Ensemble.
