Land of Nonesi is a dramatisation of the life and times of the Thembu Queen Nonesi who was appointed as regent when her husband, King Ngubengcuka died in 1848. She turned against E.Z. Warner, a British agent in Thembuland who facilitated her appointment hoping to be able to control her. Nonesi refused to lead her people out of the land along the Indwe River that had attracted the attention of some white farmers. She was arrested and became the first woman to be incarcerated on Robben Island as a political prisoner. She was later banished to Libode where she died.
