Not Falling is a tragicomic theatre, dance, and movement two-woman show. It looks at relationship dynamics, medical malpractice, disability, Taylor Swift, and trying not to become your mother (even though you are). Through following the story of Maddie, a young woman who develops the same degenerative disease as her mother, the play engages with different ways of caring. Maddie’s girlfriend, Alexis, navigates the challenges of transitioning from partner to caregiver, and the unprecedented turn that their love story has taken. Maddie’s doctor treads the line between professional ambition, parading her patient as a medical anomaly, and providing care for someone with a disease that she does not quite understand … with ambition almost always winning. Throughout, Maddie battles with history repeating itself as a cycle of caregiving – having spent her late teens as a caregiver for her mother, and entering her adult life as someone who must be cared for.
Alexis, the doctor, and the mother are all played by Lilitha Tsetsana, while Maddie is played by Bethany McLachlan-Evans. Originally performed at Theatre Arts in 2022, reviewer Robyn Cohen writes: “what I loved about this play is its unflinching grip on reality. There are no aphorisms bandied about. Life is what it is … high energy dance/physical theatre elevates the narrative above the confines of the physical.”
