On the Flip Side

Music / Thomas Pringle

Can of Worms SA brings you a feisty performance of live music – original tunes written and arranged by the group themselves. Music features vocals from newly crowned lead singer Kerry Hiles, as well as lyrical lines from the saxophone, clarinet and electric violin. The sound is driven by the drumkit, bass and electric guitar. Several of the band are multi-instrumentalists, changing instruments during the set, which presents a varied and interesting performance. Drummer Steve Meise switches between drumkit and djembe for some songs, calling on tribal rhythms to drive the music. The bands unique sound is a fusion of various genres including World Music, Afro-fusion, and Folk Rock. Think Zap Mama, Freshly Ground, and The Waterboys. A refreshing and catchy musical style that you will soon learn to recognise as Can of Worms SA.

The show has interactive elements – you will be invited to sing along, dance along, and lose yourself in the music. This cohesive group of musicians present authentic, original South African music for all ages to enjoy.

Front lady Kerry Hiles needs no introduction. She joined the group in 2023, after the dynamic and talented Chido left due to family commitments. Kerry is a South African singer and bass player, actress, MC, and voice artist. She acted in the television soapie Isidingo for many years and has also played bit parts in feature films shot in SA. Despite a host of other accolades, it is performing music which really resonates with Kerry. She brings with her years of experience in cover bands, original bands and show bands, covering various styles of music. This award-winning artist engages her audiences every time she takes to the stage and Can of Worms SA is proud to have her on board.

Kerry is backed up by founding band members Steve Meise & April Bosazza. As well as performing on drums, Steve is a prolific songwriter and brings his songs to the band to bring to life. April, who plays woodwind for the band, partners with Dalena Mostert on violin, to build up harmonies and add melodic interest to the music, often changing instruments between songs to create a specific timbre. The band is completed by James Mallinson on bass and Dylan Durant on guitar; both seasoned musicians with many years of experience playing in a variety of bands and musical styles. James has a talent for creating grounding, steady grooves while Dylan has an ear for finding that mean melodic hook that will make the song stick in your head for days.

“Their performances include interactive elements – you will be invited to sing along, dance along, and lose yourself in the music. This cohesive group of musicians present authentic, original South African music for all ages to enjoy.”
