Return of the Cypher

Music / The Black Power Station

This is an original music series which seeks to showcase the Eastern Cape’s hip-hop scene and beyond. We give the people a snapshot of the impact and versatility of the young artists in our community.

Our headliner this year is Tolo LikaKheswa, a multidisciplinary artist who has participated in music festivals around the country collaborating with an array of respected names in the industry with national and international acclaim. The likes of Ian Kamau, Msaki, Samething Soweto and The Muffins to name a few. He has made Radio and Television appearances on Ukhozi FM, Tru FM, Bay FM and Bay TV. His Art has been featured as the official art for the first season of SABC 1’s Youth Culture programme and in 2020, another piece was the official poster and branding for marketing the Fakugesi African Digital Innovation Festival.

The day will feature an impromptu cypher and include live performances from a selection of the best poets in the Eastern Cape.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

FALKAB, short for “Fits, Art, Lyrics, Knowledge And Beats”, is a creative outlet founded and run by multidisciplinary artist, Tolo Likakheswa. Ever since its inception in 2014, it has played a significant role in using creative art as a tool for education and development with community based projects that are curated within the Music and Public Art space. In attempts to place at the forefront of urban and rural development. We rejuvenate old ruins with colour that have in many cases become hubs for crime and drug use into safe spaces the community can access to reflect on the social ills and challenges it faces while placing it at position that will attract tourism and substantial investment.
Tolo as an individual artist has participated in music festivals and shows around the country getting to collaborate and share stages with respected names in the industry with national and international acclaim. The likes of Ian Kamau, Msaki, Samething Soweto and The Muffins to name a few. He has made Radio and Television appearances in Ukhozi FM, Tru FM, Bay FM and Bay TV. His Art has been featured as the official art for the first season of SABC 1’s Youth Culture programme and in 2020, another piece was the official poster and branding for marketing the Fakugesi African Digital Innovation Festival. In the same year He was one of the artists selected to paint at IPAF which is Africa’s biggest public art festival happening in Cape Town.
To this day FALKAB still pushes for innovative ways of utilizing Art as a medium to bridge the gap between social responsibility and commercial viability by forging a relationship between commissions and community outreach projects to ensure that each one feeds off the other to foster change the betterment of the art and the community it affects.
