This is us (Ke rona)

Theatre / Princess Alice

This production tells the story of ordinary people and the challenges they have to go through on a day to day basis. Centred around an African family, somewhere in South Africa, the work explores the economic and racial divides of our nation. It also pays attention to how economic disadvantages are exaggerated by gender and racial discrimination.

A family going through hardships, survives on the social grant of Thabiso Mooki, a 67-year-old man who has spent his life working in gardens and on farms as a general worker. Getting work on the farm was easy but leaving was another matter as that could only happen through escaping.
Ipeleng Selebogo is a 40-year-old woman who has a teen boy who is gets good grades at school, but that comes as no comfort to her as she is struggling to find a job. As if that is enough to deal with, there is a younger sister confined to a wheelchair who loves acting, but can’t find anyone to teach her, let alone hire her. At only 23 years old, she is suffering from depression.
Thabo Selebogo is a 49-year-old man who, despite holding a degree in communication, struggles to find a job, and finds himself working part time for the Extended Public Works Program (EPWP). He suffers from severe depression that results in continuous panic attacks that sometimes become seizures.

All these dysfunctions of the family relate to the land we are living in. It is in a true sense, a reflection of us as a nation. This is us (ke rona) – a dysfunctional nation – is who and what we are.
