Conducted and led by UP’s coordinator for jazz studies, Prof Mageshen Naidoo, Jazz UP is an undergraduate ensemble based at the University of Pretoria, established in 2019. The band currently consists of six students who are members of the University’s 2023 undergraduate jazz cohort. Jazz UP have prepared a South African based repertoire for their performance, including arrangements of seminal compositions such as Yakhal’ Inkomo, Nants Nkululeko, Cape Samba, Mra and Monwabisi. Sharing the gig is an ensemble from the University of Cape Town Music School, which has for decades produced some of the finest young jazz musicians in the country.
