It is the last night of August during the height of the Depression years in South Africa. A mother keeps her daughter under strict supervision on a poor, remote small-holding, the two of them scraping together a living sewing sacks for the dung brought to them by local farmers. It’s a strange and unsettling night: the circus has come to town and, with it, a sense of foreboding. The night is interrupted by the arrival of a blind police officer, who promises the women protection. However, this night happens to coincide with the anniversary of the disappearance of several young women from the town, and it is expected that the culprit will once again claim a victim.
