Afrika Sings is a musical theatre celebration of South African musical theatre through songs and dance that follows the narrative of hope. This 2022 National Arts Festival Bronze Ovation Award Winning production returns to the festival and is woven together by a cast of singers and dancers from the Sonwa Sakuba Institute for the Performing Arts. With a set list that includes an eclectic array of songs from South African hit Broadway musicals such as King Kong, Sarafina, The Lion King, Iphi Ntombi and Gibson Kente’s How Long. From the village hills of the Eastern Cape to the dusty mines of Johannesburg, Afrika Sings ensures to leave audiences of all ages clapping and stomping their feet to the Afrikan sound.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
This production features a cast of students that are currently enrolled within the 3 three-year Professional Training Programme at the Sonwa Sakuba Institute for the Performing Arts in East London. Having launched in 2021 the growing institution is fast becoming a household name within the Eastern Cape for producing world class performers and productions. Through providing access to international qualifications in dance, music and drama and a faculty of experienced industry professionals, the quality of training at the institution has been revered and received critical acclaim by both international examiners and audiences. Amongst the list of many, previous productions include ‘Hidden Identity’, ‘Till Death Do Us Apart’, ‘Moana JR’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘All You Need Is Love’, ‘Abangoni’ and the Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award Winning ‘Afrika Sings!’. Striving to engage, empower and inspire both students and audiences, the institution continues to take talents to the next level whilst ensuring that graduates emerge as multifaceted 21st century artists.
